Day by day

Meløy

We will meet in Ørnes, Meløy municipality, about 120 km South of Bodø.

Day 1 | 17 km

Fykan – Gråtadalstua

We start early and enter Láhko National Park in the morning. We pass by several major lakes and admire large caves that lie next to them all the way. We walk up to the Gamma hut in Kvitsteindalen and have a lunch break before continuing onward journey up the valley. We pass a famous river that flows down from the ridges of the valley and disappears in labyrinths of caves. Locals call this area Glomfjellet, and it is precisely this valley Glomfjellet is best known for, with magnificent mountain formations from the ice age. It is truly a spectacular sight – Lahko National Park is the largest contiguous limestone system in the northern Europe. As we walk up Kvitsteindalen, you can glimpse Svartisen, Norway’s second largest glacier, with its nunataks. Then we enter Skaveldalen, where lies a large snow drift that we must pass and climb over to get over the ridge and down to Gråtådalen. Here we follow the DNT trail to the Gråtådalstua cabin, where we camp for the night. There are actually two cabins, both have beds, gas for cooking and 12 V electric.

Day 2 | 16 km

Gråtådalstu – Beiarstua

Gråtådalen is a beautiful valley immersed in wilderness. We move slowly upwards until we reach the ridge of the next mountain, from where we can see all the Saltfjellet mountains in the East, just right to the Swedish border. We follow the ridge until we get to a steep path down the mountainside and past Reingården valley. Beiarstua by the Beiarelva river is equipped with electricity, kitchen and beds. We take advantage of the shower and the sauna. Outside, there is also a nice pine forest, swimming pond and a barbecue area.

Day 3 | 27 km

Beiarstua – Saltfjellstua

This is the longest hike of our adventure. We start in the pine forest by the Beiarelva that stretches all the way throughout Tverrådalen. We follow Tverråga, that initially is a silent stream and then becomes a deafening river hundred meters down the path. It must be crossed via a suspension bridge that only one person can pass at a time. Later we cross several tufts, silent reminders of old mountain farms in the days gone by. When we go down to Tollådalen, we head for Bukkhaugbua, owned by the State Forests Authority, which marks about halfway of today’s leg. About 3 km from the hut, there is an impressive Bukkhaugfossen waterfall, which can be heard long before we even get to admire it. Next we go towards Stallogropa, which is the portal into Saltfjellet. Just below here is the famous Saltfjellstua, the nicest lodge in the entire Saltfjellet. A long day of walk has come to an end, this means dinner and beds for everyone.

Day 4 | 23 km

Saltfjellstua – Lønnstua

We start the day by passing a suspension bridge to get on the other side of Bjølåga, a deep river. We move upwards about 400 meters of elevation and enter Steindalen valley. We pass Lønnstindvatnet lake and wade across Kjemobekken basin, if the water level permits it, before we go down towards Lønnsdalen. The Lønnsdalstua cabin is equipped with electricity, kitchen and beds.

Day 5 | 15 km

Lønnstua – Sweden

We pass the E6 road and enter a beautiful birch and pine forests, which mark the last stage of our incredible journey. We must cross a bridge and pass several lakes. Then we follow Nordland route over Litlefjellet and head towards the Graddis cabin. Here is the pickup area, from where we head to Lønnsdalen.

This day we separate and go home, enriched by the amazing experiences and friendships that may last a lifetime.
