Join us for a round trip in the Rago National Park!
BeyondLimits organizes a hiking in Storskog-Rago National Park, one of the smallest but most spectacular National Parks in Norway. We bring all the necessary equipment to camp outside, in breathtaking outdoor locations.
Walking in Rago is like walking in a wonderland. The landscape is dominated by a wild and majestic mountain scenery with deep gorges, rivers, countless waterfalls, glaciers, boulders, ancient pine forests, steep mountains and lakes. You really get the feeling of contrasts and wilderness.
The area was protected as a national park in 1971 and has an area of 171 km². It shares borders with the Swedish national parks Padjelanta, Sarek and Stora Sjofallet. Together, the four parks are the largest protected area in Europe with 5700 km². In 2015, The Guardian included Rago among the top ten national parks in Europe.
Day by day
Day 1
Lakshola – Storskogvatnet
Our trip starts at Lakshola in Sørfold, about half-an-hour drive North of Fauske. We first follow the path along the crystal-clear Storskog river. After some time, we cross over and start moving up the Nordskaret ridge. The little climb will certainly make your muscles ache a bit, but you will forget all of it when you reach the top, with the perfect view over the Storskodalen valley and the spectacular Litlverivassfossen waterfall cascading down the mountain side, which drains a lake encircled by stony mountains and becomes the Storkskog river in the green valley 250 meters below.
We then continue further and deeper into Rago, in the direction of the Storskogvatnet lake. Along the way, we make a stop and visit the mighty Storskog waterfall. Eventually, we set up a suitable campsite by Storskogvatnet. For those who want, this will be a perfect opportunity to try to catch some trouts. We light a bonfire and prepare some food, while we enjoy the magnificent scenery that surrounds us. If it starts to rain, we hang up a tarp as a shelter.
Day 2
Silverskarvatnet – Lakshola
After a good night sleep in the tents, we continue the trip to the lakes Silverskarvatnet and Litjverivatnet. Here we cross over the Litlverivassfossen waterfall that we’ve seen before via a suspension bridge. This gives us a perfect view down the waterfall and the valley below. We continue over Grisryggen ridge and gradually down to the road a few kilometers west of Lakshola. From there, happy and satisfied with the Rago experience, we drive our way home.
Safety
At Beyondlimits, we always focus on safety during our trips. The trip follows permanent trail, and is led by an experienced and knowledgeable local guide. We provide tents, stoves, first aid kit, navigational aids, and safety equipment. There is no cellphone coverage during the trip, but we bring emergency beacon and a device for communication.
You need to wear clothes that are suitable for the North Norwegian mountains. You have to bring sleeping bag. Once signed up, you will receive the equipment list that explains all the details about equipment.
